Quest Programmes

This is some of the best therapy I have had with my illness."

A multi-award winning, innovative health improvement project.

Our Walking Therapy Programme uses local and national countryside as a primary source of learning, involvement and participation. We are funded by the Big Lottery, Natural England, NHS Norfolk and Norfolk Social Services, and provide weekly walks in Norfolk. Each walk has a ‘theme of the day’ such as leadership, personal responsibility or community living and lasts approximately six hours, covering a distance of between six and ten miles.

What Makes Discovery Quest Different?
In addition to the weekly walks, the project provides a range of walking and camping opportunities in five of the UK’s National Parks (Lake District, Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons, Western Highlands and Peak District).

The project has a four-stage approach; each stage is progressive and focuses on enhancing personal development.

Discovery Quest includes a wildlife workbook that participants complete over a six-month period. The workbook is specific to the local environment and has been written and developed by a leading wildlife expert. Discovery Quest works closely with a range of outdoor providers and wildlife trusts.

The project has been a major success, with many of the participants who complete the course achieving further goals such as going to university, finding paid employment and volunteering on a regular basis.

Future Developments
The team hopes to deliver a one-year mountaineering programme for ex-service personnel with serious mental ill health.

Duncan's Story

When Duncan started the Discovery Quest programme he was extremely isolated, detached and very fearful of travelling. His anxieties encouraged him to depend on his mother (who was also a participant) to transport him to and from the walks.
